Abstract

Some theoretical and experimental investigations of neutron transport have been performed in nonorganic material samples, geometric dimensions of which are comparable with a neutron free-path length in a sample material. As a result new absorption neutron moisture meters have been developed and designed, consisting of a measuring unit with a container, made of Ti or stainless steel, for accommodation of a sample (radioactive, chemically corrosive, toxic and other dangerous materials), and a control panel, connected between themselves by a special cable. A measuring unit combines biological protection, neutron source and detector, a space for a sample accommodation and a base plate. The weight of a measuring unit is about 40 kg.

Such moisture meters at a source power 1 10⁶ ns^-1 can provide moisture estimation in 5 min and concentration of hydrocarbon finders in samples of volume 0.5-1.0 dm³ with an absolute error not greater than +0.25% in the rang 1%-50%, that is, they preserve such advantages of a neutron method as speed of response, rather high accuracy, testing through metal walls at a sample volume 100 times less compared with known neutron moisture meters. Our moisture meters can be effectively used in powder metallurgy, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, chemical and construction industries, geology and so on.
